Introduce yourself and your business.

Hi! My name is Chloe and I am the maker behind Pixie Cove gifts. Originally from the East Coast, I went to college in Toronto and work part time in the entertainment industry. At Pixie Cove gifts I make almost everything with polymer clay! From charms, jewelry, décor and ornaments to creating Illustrated Digital cards and invites.

How did you launch your business & what made you want to start a small business?

I’ve always had a creative spark, love drawing and creating cool art; I wanted to have something to separate my work in the industry from my personal artistic creations.

I’ve always liked the idea of being in full control over what I create, having my own business and working on my own time. I then decided to give opening my own Etsy shop a try.

What are some struggles you had starting your business and how did you over come them?

Figuring out what I first wanted to do. I started without an actual plan of action and had too many different creative ideas that I couldn’t decide what to focus on more. I needed to find a niche that I was good at and stick with it. I then eventually came across polymer clay (love for sculpting). I started experimenting with it more and discovered so many possibilities; I fell in love with it instantly!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My own creative imagination and video games. I use a lot of inspiration from games, movies, music and daydreaming. Taking long walks through beautiful scenery helps a lot.

What motivates you as a maker?

Seeing all the positive reviews and positive feedback from people, friends and family. It helps me believe that I’m doing something right and shouldn’t give up! I like to see that I make others happy and smile when they see my creations; having such a positive impact on others is very rewarding. And having my boyfriend tell me every day how awesome everything is helps the self esteem too!

What is a goal you set for yourself as a maker/artist and how did you achieve it?

When I started I told myself that I should create something new and different every week. Experiment to see what works and what doesn’t, to keep my mind busy and always creating something because if I stopped I feared that I would run out of ideas or burn out. I would take a few hours a week, listen to music and just sit down by myself without any distractions and just create. It helped me focus more and come up with more great unique ideas for my business.

What is your favorite part of being a maker?

I love creating fun designs and showing everyone what I’ve done! There’s nothing I like more than working on my own time and creating amazing products that people are just as excited to see.

Do you have any tips for new makers/ small business owners?

Follow your gut and start creating because you never know! I first thought that no one was going to like what I was making and I wasn’t going to make it very far. I’m into my first year and so far I’ve been getting nothing but positive feedback! It’s a very challenging but fun experience to try!

What are some hobbies or interests you have outside of your small business?

I love to draw, play video games and baking! I love nature walks and you can usually find me sitting by the ocean water watching the waves.

Share a fun fact about yourself.

I love animals and I’ll talk to them like they are people, can’t find me at a party/gathering? Do they have a pet? I’ll be hanging out with the dog.
