Pumpkin Bunny -Free Crochet Pattern

Pumpkin Bunny

A free crochet pattern by The Cozy Chipmunk
Trick or Treat! Straight from the pumpkin patch comes this little bunny, all dressed up and ready to join you in all of your Autumn festivities!  Just make sure to use a different pumpkin when it’s time for pie!

Difficulty: Advanced Beginner

U.S. Terminology

Size: 6 inches seated from the tips of the ears down

Materials

Hook: 3.5 mm

Yarn: Worsted Weight: Approx 100-120 yards- Fur Colour, Orange, Green, small amount of pink for nose (I used Impeccable by Loops and Threads)

10 mm Safety Eyes or Embroidered Eyes

Polyfill

Needle

Optional: Stitch Markers and pins, embroidery thread for eyelashes

Other Notes:

Magic Ring alternative- if you do not feel comfortable doing a magic ring, you can also chain 2 and work the indicated number of stitches into the first chain

Continuous Rounds- each row is completed in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated

Stuffing: When stuffing the pumpkin, it needs to be firm enough to support the bunny head, but have enough give to be able to shape the pumpkin after crocheting, and to be able to attach the head.

Pattern:

Head:

In fur colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)

R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)

R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)

R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)

R7-R13: SC around (36 st)

R14: (4 SC, INV DEC) x6 (30 st)

Place 10 mm eyes between R10 &11, 5 st apart. If you wish to sew on eyelashes, do not add washers to back of the safety eyes yet! Remove the eyes once you like their placement, and using embroidery thread, sew on two or three eyelashes for each eye, starting where the safety eyes will go and out on an angle. Make sure they are long enough otherwise they will be hidden behind the eyes.

Reinsert the eyes and add washers to the back.

R15: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)

Start stuffing, making sure to stuff VERY firmly

R16: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18 st)

R17: (SC, INV DEC) x6 (12 st)

FO, weaving in ends. Finish stuffing. Using pink or brown yarn and a needle, stitch a nose, running the needle through several times horizontally, in line with the eyes, and one time vertically, 2 rows down.

Pumpkin Cap:

In orange colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)

R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)

R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)

R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)

R7-R17: SC around (36 st)

R18: SL ST around (36 st)

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Put cap on bunny head, with the opening in the direction of your bunny’s face. It will be a tight fit if you stuffed the bunny head adequately. With the yarn tail, sew up and down behind the SL ST row. I sewed up and down through every few stitches, which meant I needed to go around the whole head a few times to sew down most stitches. Weave in ends.

Stem:

In green colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC (12 st)

R3: In BLO, SC around (12 st)

R4: (2 SC, INV DEC) x3 (9 st)

R5: (SC, INV DEC) x3 (6 st)

R6: SC around (6 st)

FO, leave long end for sewing. If the stem doesn’t hold its shape, you can stuff the top with a bit of stuffing. Pin to the top of the bunny’s head and sew on. Weave in ends.

Ears: (make 2)

Using fur colour yarn:

R1: 5 MR (5 st)

R2: INC SC around (10 st)

R3: (4 SC, INC SC) x2 (12 st)

R4-R6: SC around (12 st)

R7: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)

R8-R11: SC around (10 st)

FO, leaving long tail for sewing. Do not stuff. Flatten ears and pinch base in half, sewing back and forth a few times. Pin ears to top of head, starting 3 stitches from the stem on either side, sewing in place. Weave in ends.

Pumpkin Body:

In orange colour yarn:

R1: 6 SC into MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3: (SC, INC SC) x6 (18 st)

R4: (2 SC, INC SC) x6 (24 st)

R5: (3 SC, INC SC) x6 (30 st)

R6: (4 SC, INC SC) x6 (36 st)

R7: (5 SC, INC SC) x6 (42 st)

R8: (6 SC, INC SC) x6 (48 st)

R9-17: SC around (48 st)

R18: (6 SC, INV DEC) x6 (42 st)

R19: (5 SC, INV DEC) x6 (36 st)

R20: (4 SC, INV DEC) x6 (30 st)

Start stuffing, and continue to stuff as you complete subsequent rows. While you want the pumpkin to be firm enough to support the head, you do not want it to be too firm otherwise it will be difficult to shape the pumpkin and sew on the head later.

R21: (3 SC, INV DEC) x6 (24 st)

R22: (2 SC, INV DEC) x6 (18 st)

R23: (SC, INV DEC) x6 (12 st)

R24: INV DEC x6 (6 st)

FO, leaving a VERY long length of yarn to shape the pumpkin. Run your needle and yarn through the base of the pumpkin, then up around the side and down through the middle again, pulling the yarn tight to create an indentation. Repeat until you have the number of pumpkin indentations that you would like to have (I made a total of 6). To keep the shape and secure your yarn, run your needle up and down through the centre several times, leaving your yarn at the top of the pumpkin. If you cut a long enough piece of yarn, you will have enough to attach the head. If not, you will need to cut a new piece to attach later.

Attaching the Head:

Because of the shape of the pumpkin, it can be a bit tricky to sew the head onto the pumpkin. Start by pinning the head to the top of the pumpkin in a position you like. Sew underneath and around the head, squeezing down on the pumpkin to make it flat as you sew to make it easier to attach. Weave in the ends.

Legs: (make 2)

In fur colour:

R1: 6 SC in MR (6 st)

R2: INC SC around (12 st)

R3-R5: SC around (12 st)

R6: (4 SC, INV DEC) x2 (10 st)

Stuff at base of foot, and continue to lightly stuff halfway up the leg

R7: (3 SC, INV DEC) x2 (8 st)

R8-R12: SC around (8 st)

To close, pinch sides closed and 4 SC across through top of stitches of both sides. Finish off, leaving length of yarn. Pin legs to the bottom of the pumpkin body so they sit in a position that you like. Sew on and weave in ends.

Arms: (make 2)

In fur colour:

R1: 4 SC in MR (4 st)

R2: INC SC (8 st)

R3-5: SC around (8 st)

FO and leave a long piece of yarn for sewing to the body. Stuff with polyfill and pin to the sides of the pumpkin body so they sit in a position that you like. Sew on and weave in ends.

Tail:

In fur colour:

R1: 4 SC in MR (4 st)

R2: INC SC (8 st)

R3: SC around (8 st)

FO and leave a long piece of yarn for sewing. Pin to the back of the pumpkin body and sew on. Weave in ends.
